1967 Knitting Styles

Having a rumble in some of the old books we have I came across the 1967 offering the "Top 20 ... pick of 1967's designs for you to make, everyone a best seller ... and something for everyone for work, or play, town or country". Complete with patterns for jumpers and cardigans modelled even by style icon Twiggy, the featured adverts alongside offer an insight into not only products, but society, consumption of ideals and femininity.

The front cover capturing a summertime boating outing, the idyllic nuclear family cast in matching orange and brown jumpers.

If only they made such positive advertisements about the feminine body and the self today!

Probably the only time when you see the word stimulating" in describing the Sun newspaper together. This advert appears published only three years after the newspaper was launched as a broadsheet in 1964.

Collecting your Emu wool bands and pick up your shiny new pan. But pans and wool? Selling pans in wool shops?! Anyone understand the link?!

The well thumbed nature of this publication can be seen through the torn bottom page, yet this final advertisement for "cuddly" patterns showcases the delight in knitting for your newborn, of creating something handmade out of love, something soft and to cherish.

  1. Really like your blog! I have a penchant for old magazines and newspapers...although as I am a mad collager, I tend to snip away at them...I don't feel as bad with newspapers for some reason, but I do have masses of 1950's ones! I've also recently been to Filey...and featured it a little on my blog...I absolutely loved it.
Anyway, thanks for a good read
